Getting started with Bloglines

Setting up an Account

1. Go to http://www.bloglines.com/.
2. Click on the Sign Up link.
3. Complete the form and click Register
4. After completing the form Bloglines will email you a verification message. In the message will be a link that you will need to follow. This will complete the registration process.

Subscribing to Feeds

5. When you are logged onto Bloglines click on the Feeds tab.
6. By default you have been subscribed to the Bloglines News feed. It will be listed on the left hand side of the screen. Let's add another subscription to your account. In another window or tab go to the Library Commission's website.
7. Look for the RSS icon located towards the top right hand side of the page. (This is one of many icons that are used to represent RSS feeds. You will learn more about them in part #9 Finding Feeds.) Click on the icon.
8. Let's subscribe to the Library Commission Blog - All Items. Copy the URL that corresponds with Library Commission Blog - All Items.
9. Go back to your Bloglines account. Click Add.
10. Paste the URL that you just copied into the Blog or Feed URL box and click Subscribe.
11. Make any desired Option changes then click Subscribe. Here are a few of the options you may want to consider.
    • Folder - If you have a lot of feeds you may want to group like feeds in specific folders.
    • Display Preferences - This controls how the feed will be displayed.
    • Access - A description of this option is available on the Options screen.
12. You've now subscribed to your first feed. It will be displayed in the left hand column. Click on the name of the feed to start reading. Clicking on the name of a feed will also mark all items in that feed as read. To keep an individual post designated as new check the Keep New box.
13. Let's try adding one more feed. This time we will add the feed for the Nebraska Library Commission's Flickr account. First go to NLC's Flickr page.
14. Locate the RRS feed icon. It's towards the bottom of the page.
15. Click on the icon.
16. Copy the URL of the page.
17. Return to Bloglines and add the feed. See steps 10 & 11 above if you need help.
