Thing #13: What are you doing?

First, watch Twitter in Plain English:

Twitter allows users to post 140 character updates, answering the question: “What are you doing?”. These posts are shared via the web to either the world or to the users’ friends.

Fred Stutzman, in his 12-Minute Definitive Guide, describes Twitter this way: Call it a microblog, a social presence tool, or whatever else you’d like–it does appear that Twitter is here to stay. As a tool with many flexible uses, it is likely that we’ll see individuals integrating Twitter with all sorts of interesting applications in the future. It is this simplicity and flexibility that makes Twitter a winner–in 140 characters or less.

Users can access Twitter messages — called Tweets — via the Web, via an RSS feed, and via text on their cellular phones or any number of third part apps. Stutzman divides uses into two areas: social updating and microblogging. Accessing a Twitter user, one might find an update on his or her day, a direct message to another Twitterer, or a bit of wit and wisdom.

Libraries are using Twitter as well as a means to update content on the Web or for alert services.

Discovery Resources:

Discovery Exercise:

1. Visit Twitter and sign up for a free account. Try a few tweets.

Use Ellyssa Kroski’s article and follow a few of the librarians listed there.

Follow one of us - Allana, Christa, Michael, or Susan.

Or follow the Nebraska Library Commission's NLC News or NLC Reference.

2. Search Twitter for mentions of your library, school or anything that interests you to explore how people use this tool. What conversations did you find?

3. Blog about the experience. Did you like micro-blogging? How could you libraries use Twitter? How could you use Twitter?

I just created my twitter account and was looking around. I went to twitter's blog link. I thought I recognized someone in a photo. Sure enough. A co-founder of twitter is originally from Nebraska. He is also a co-founder of blogger. My parents and his parents used to run in the same circle. I drive by his dad's house often.

The "York Nebraska" tweets have a strong bias towards eating & restroom stops.
This part of town is the focus of such mentions.
Is the single (as of 10 Nov. 2008) "branched oak lake" tweet admissible as evidence in a court of law?

Twitter was fun! I think the popularity will keep growing.

The reference question tweets for the NLC's Ask the Library service were really interesting. That service could come in really handy!

For personal use, however, I am not sold on Twitter.

My blog post on #13--Twitter:

http://quiltinlibrarylady.blogspot.com/2008/11/thing-13twittering.html

I'm still trying to figure out why people have this great need to share every little thing in their lives with a bunch of strangers on the Internet.

Spent a few days with twitter, thinking maybe I'd grow fonder with each passing day. Sigh... It didn't happen. Here's my blog about twitter:
http://rockinref.blogspot.com/2008/11/twitter.html

P.S. How did some of you create a more personalized background to your blog pages? All I saw were ready-made templates?

Susan said...

Rita, I got my new background here: http://www.thecutestblogontheblock.com/backgrounds.php. If you click on one of the backgrounds, you will get step-by-step instructions. Note: It tells you which of the Blogger templates you have to switch your blog to before applying their background. I found this site after looking at Seeryus 2.0's blog, but I know there are others out there too.

Twitter seems to have a lot of bugs and 'temporarily unavialable' features....at least the last five days I have been trying to use it. So far, I am not a fan.

I still think I like real tweets, the ones I hear outside my window, better than Twitter Tweets, but I do like the reference questions from NLC. http://dancingcranefarm.blogspot.com/2008/11/tweets.html

How do I make the permalink a functioning link? I see Madame bonbon has hers that way.

kathy the librarian said...

For #13...twitter...interesting. Trying to follow the most followed librarians...the link was not functioning. I did check on libraries, Obama, the NLC site, Christa and Michael. Not sure I will find the time to do all this twittering.

I created the Twitter account today and then after I finished placed a link on my blog. However, I did not like how that looked so I went back and took it off. I thought Twitter was so interesting and liked that the comments are concise so one doesn't need to spend lots of time going through blather. But I still am so new that I am not sure how I would use this in the library.

I had a lot of trouble finding people on Twitter - maybe I am just too impatient, but I searched 3 different times to find some of the library folks and pretty much found the NLC folks whose Twitter names were given.

I'm not sure if I like microblogging yet as I just started using Twitter. The library could definitely use Twitter to notify its users of new books available or for telling them of unexpected library closing due to weather or whatever. I think we could use twitter in our racing pigeon club for quick reminders or announcements.
