Thing #12: A thing about LibraryThing

Are you a book lover or cataloger at heart? Or do you enjoy finding lost and forgotten gems on the shelf to read? Then LibraryThing may be just the tool for you. Developed for booklovers, this online tool not only allows you to easily create an online catalog of your own it also connects you to other people who have similar libraries and reading tastes. Add a book to your catalog by just entering the title - it’s so easy that you don’t even need MARC record training to do it – or connect with other users through your similar reading tastes. There are lots of ways to use LibraryThing. You can even view your books on a virtual shelf, add a widget (see sidebar on right of this blog for sample) to display titles that are in your catalog or install a LT Search box on your blog.

So why not join the ranks and create your own library online. With over 349,000 registered (BTW: LibraryThing also has group forum for librarians) users and over 23 million cataloged books, you're bound to discover something new.

Discovery Resources:

Discovery Exercise:
  1. Take a look around LibraryThing and create an account.
  2. Add a least 5 books to your library.
  3. Blog about your findings and be sure to link to your LibraryThing catalog from your blog post.

Created a LibraryThing account last spring but lost enthusiasm for it after adding around 35 books. To see a sampling of my collection, visit my blog at:

http://mrsjustice.blogspot.com

P.s. I think this might be a convenient was to create groups of books you have put out for a special display in a public library. People always want the list of what you had eight months later...here's a possible solution!

My blog entry about Thing #12 is here:

http://quiltinlibrarylady.blogspot.com/2008/11/thing-12-libraything.html

I have patrons who are always asking if there's a way I can check to see if they've read a book. I can, but if I ever run "obfuscate" on the library's automation system that past info will be gone. This would be the perfect answer for them -- they could check for themselves on any computer or even their cell phones.
Maybe I should start pushing it -- do you think there's a reward for doing that?

For starters, I thought to challenge "library thing" by going for something really obscure -- dad & mom sold about 3,000 copies of Antique & Unusual Wrenches.
Then I went for Dr. Seuss's 1931 gem, Boners.
Nice cover pix (even the 1931 rarity) without all the amazon.com advertising.
This has real possibilities, doesn't it?

It was kind of fun having my own personal catalog. More fun to see how many other people had read & cataloged the same titles as I had.

I was looking through Library Thing For Libraries FAQ, and the interconnect is ISBN... this is OK for current mass market but no help at all for older, local interest, etc.
Set up a yorklib account with the intent of adding older, local interest content to the collective, but could not get add new books manually to work. Spent a half hour trying to add the The Saga of 125 Years (a local York history title). Got two other local history titles added to "our library" because the titles were already in Library Thing -- & was able to add cover images to those two.
A lot of work for the minimal results achieved.

Michael Sauers said...

books4york,

I find myself adding books manually every so often and have never had a problem. I'm thinking that you might have just run into a temporary glitch. Also, Tim Spalding, the guy that runs LibraryThing is generally quick with the problem reports so I'd suggest you let him know what the problems was.

books4york said...

As a follow up to my last Thing 12 post and Michael Sauers' reply -- I tried switching from Firefox to I.E. & shucky darns it works (drat) -- Library Thing should add a heads up to their FAQs to save blockheads like me some frustration.

Michael Sauers said...

Just to clarify, I'm a total Firefox & Chrome user. (I only go in the general vicinity of IE when I have to.) So I still think you found a temporary bug. Either way, I'm glad you got it to work.

This would be a real asset for customers to keep track of the books they read. It would also be great to do for a small home library. I myself could not use it as I have over 200 books at home. I do like to read and some books are just hard to get rid of. Sometimes I pick up an old book and reread it because it was such a good book. I do like the fact that you don't have to know or type in all the information. That is a big help. Interesting thing.
