Library 2.0 is term used to describe a new set of concepts for developing and delivering library services. The name, as you may guess, is an extension of Web 2.0 and shares many of its same philosophies and concepts, including harnessing the user in both design and implementation of services, embracing constant change as a development cycle over the traditional notion of upgrades, and reworking library services to meet the users in their space, as opposed to ours (libraries). Many have argued that Library 2.0 is more than just a term used to describe concepts that revolve around the use of technology; it is also a term that can be used to describe both physical and mindset changes that are occurring within libraries to make our spaces and services more user-centric and inviting. Others within the profession have asserted that libraries have always been 2.0: collaborative, customer friendly and welcoming. But no matter which side of the debate proponents fall, both sides agree that libraries of tomorrow, even five or ten years from now, will look substantially different from libraries today.

Library 2.0: increased interaction with our patrons using the internet.
My blog: http://raptorrunn3r.blogspot.com/2008/11/library-20.html
While looking for something else, came upon the Kankakee, ILL public library web site which includes 2.0 in their web site title, and which documents the technologies used to build the site.
They propose to use a wiki to build a community encyclopedia. Very ambitious .. wonder if they can keep it going.
Wow, libraries have changed so much in the ten years I have been here. It will be exciting to see where 2.0 and beyond takes us.

But again, the PPTs that I erronesoulsy embedded last "thing" are covering up most of the text of my blog.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Thing # 16! Some of this terminology I don't understand. But we know there will have to be changes in the future for the health of libraries. mboyingt@gmail.com
Positive changes are good and are on their way! THING #16 is finished and now continue on to THING #17.

It is amazing what can be found through Web 2.0 & Library 2.0. The technology stuns me every day as I explore new things. I love how some of what we have looked at so far will benefit our library and I look forward to utilizing it more and more. I think we are only limited by our imagination and whether or not we are willing to try and to check out new things. My advice is keep exploring and keep learning.

“The Library is human because it makes the library a social and emotionally engaging center for learning and experience. Librarian 2.0, then, is the “strategy guide” for helping users find information, gather knowledge and create content."
To know is to have power!
Interesting exercise! I wrote an extremely long post. The bottom line is bringing together information and people. http://theantiquarianlibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/12/thing-16-on-library-20-and-web-20.html
Enjoyed the readings, especially the wiki. Oddly, I hadn't thought of privacy issues connected with 2.0.

Lots of information and ideas to absorb all at once. Change is good as long as we're careful not to change just for the sake of it.
I enjoyed reading all of the articles and was pleased that different prespectives on Library 2.0 were represented here. Read the blog post at:

Some things have happened since my Nov. 23rd post -- (http://l2ne.blogspot.com/2008/09/thing-16-on-library-20-web-20.html?showComment=1227503580000#c3180905520580509328) --
A "68467" FLICKR group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/york_ne/ ); we're looking for FLICKR photos to invite to the group --
A separate "delicious" identity (yorklib2) promoting "68467" as a meaningful distinctive tag for web sites with significant York, Nebraska related content; we're going to have staff systematically search the web for content --
Have kept up (sort of) with (http://4york.blogspot.com )the blog...
On the down side; no time to keep up with RSS feeds; nothing extra added to "Library Thing" in the past month; progress on the library's web site (http://www.yorklib.org ) is less than we'd anticipated.
I totally agree with being more transparent.

This seems to be an issue facing many business or distributors of goods/services/info, and it is necessary to embrace and adapt to technology advances in order to ensure that libraries have a place in future society. Library 2.0 is still a somewhat vague concept, as I feel I have yet to grasp Web 2.0 as a concept. I'll keep plugging along. Read my blog here.
I added to 2.0 concept by including "school library 2.0" Although many things are the same, because we service a more specialized population than the public library and serve as teacher and librarian, I need to look at things from a different angle. My blog on the 2.0 world: http://prairie-prose.blogspot.com/2008/12/thing-16-library-20-web-20.html
I realized this week that there is something missing from my work with 23 Things. Web 2.0 is a two way street. In addition to learning the tools, blogging our successes and failures, and reading other's blogs; we need to respond to the blogs we read. Responding to blogs will be my goal for the next month. Web 2.0 must be thought of as a community.
I loved the information given. It made me think about different ways I could involve students and teachers in Library 2.0. I know that it is important to use different ways to interest our patrons. Find more of my blog at http://whippetbooklady.blogspot.com/2009/01/16.html

http://melniel.blogspot.com/2009/01/thing-16.html
I think Library 2.0 is exactly why we are all participating in this NE LEARNS program. We need to stay current with the technology that people are demanding and how that can improve our libraries.

Thing #16 was not nearly as much fun as the previous exercises. It did acquaint me with some different views on Web 2.0 and Libraries 2.0. I enjoy all the fun stuff but we, the board, needs to discuss what direction the library should take. Guess this exercise made me think in a different direct. You can read my blog at" http://lakeverna.blogspot.com/2009/01/thing-16-library-20-and-web-20.html
Here are my thoughts on Library 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0.
My disparate responses to Library 2.0 are here.
My views on this subject are at
http://bookmobiling.blogspot.com/2009/01/on-library-20-web-20.html
I have been really taken by some parts of Library 2.0 and beyond, not so taken by others, but I really do see that libraries must move toward more interaction and patron empowerment when it comes to the content management of our "virtual" libraries. See more of my thoughts @ hplmeanderings
I looked through course offerings at San Jose State school of library science.
Library 2.0 provides a fast and somewhat superficial journey through some current course topics.
I personally am grateful for the (somewhat superficial) knowledge and confidence I have gained.
Will I take this knowledge forward with me--I hope so.
Even more timely to me is gaining a sense of where libraries overall are headed. And knowing that in another year or two everything will be different or at least the labels will change. What is next???
We (library staff) are here to serve our public--this is the constant; this is the unchanging challenge we face.

Lots of information I find library 2.0 very interesting and can't wait to learn more about where libraries are going in the future and what new technologies are out there to discover. What part will libraries play in the future.
http://jeanslearning20.blogspot.com/2009/01/thing-16.html
It seems to me that data, uninterpreted and uncontrolled, is just chaos and noise. The ultimate job of the Librarian has to be to act as filter. Not to filer content but quality. Which is of course what weeding is for.
Still overly contemplative and random...
http://milfordlibrary.blogspot.com/2009/01/hardy-20.html
The thing I see most about the change is that the librarian is going to need to be constantly aware of what Admin services are now available on the Web at all times and stay current.

Are we not brilliant, having changed so much over the years. When I came we typed catalog cards on an big, old black Remington typewriter. I AM NOT THAT OLD. But the library board back then thought it was good enough and did not see why we needed one. Of course, one lady on the board thought women should not be paid as much as men anyhow. Thus my battle began. The first was to get her off the board. She had only been on there 20+ years. We never did get an electric typewriter until after we had a computer and that particular lady was off the board. Now we have 3 public computers, 3 admin. computers, 1 children's computer, (no Internet access), 2 OPAC, and 6 laptop computers for a portable lab and for public use when the other three are busy. How far we came after we got rid of our infamouse board member.
