Tagging is an open and informal method of categorizing that allows users to associate keywords with online content (web pages, pictures & posts). In the library world we are familiar with subject cataloging that follows a strict set of rules and uses a predefined set up terms such as the Library of Congress subject headings. Tagging is the opposite. Tagging is unstructured and freeform, allowing users to create connections between data any way they want.
In the past few weeks, we’ve already explored a few sites – Flickr and LibraryThing to name two – that allow users to take advantage of tagging and in week five many even used a common tag (NELearns2.0) to create an association between photos that we individually uploaded.
This week we want to take a look at a popular social bookmarking site called Delicious.
Delicious is a social bookmarking manager which allows you to bookmark a web page and add tags to categorize your bookmarks.
Many users find that the real power of Delicious is in the social network aspect, which allows you to see how other users have tagged similar links and also discover other websites that may be of interest to you. You can think of it as peering into another users’ filing cabinet, but with this powerful bookmarking tool each user's filing cabinet helps to build an expansive knowledge network.
Current Delicious users may have noticed that the site has changed this summer. On July 31, 2008 they went live with a new interface along with changing their URL from del.icio.us to delicious.com. If you want to know more about the changes you can read about it on the Delicious blog.
For this discovery exercise you will watch a 3 1/2 minute video about Delicious then have a chance to explore the site. The video was created before Delicious updated their site however the information provided in the video is still relevant.
- View the Social Bookmarking in Plain English video. It will provide you with an overview how Delicious works. You will need speakers or a headset to hear the video.
- Explore Delicious. Try clicking on a bookmark that has also been bookmarked by a lot of other users. Can you see the comments they added about this bookmark or the tags that they used to categorize this reference?
- You may also want to look at the Nebraska Library Commission's account. The links were taken from our Best of the Web site. The Holdrege Public Library is also using Delicious. They have even put a tagroll that was generated using Delicious on their website.
- Spend a few minutes thinking about how folks tagged their link. If you had to assign tags to the NebraskAccess website what tags would you use? Take a look at the tags other Delicious users have assigned. Do you agree with them? What tags would you assign?
- Create a blog post about your experience and thoughts about this tool. Can you see the potential of this tool for research assistance? Would it be a easy way to share bookmarks with groups of people such as book groups? Or just as an easy way to create bookmarks that can be accessed from anywhere?

nancys - I just opened another window and did a copy/paste with the url from my first comment and it worked fine. I'm not sure what happened.
Here's what I think about Delicious.

I can really see myself using Delicious! Here's my blog post:

If anyone has ideas to share on how to encourage patrons to use a library's delicious page, please share!
Delicious blog post
I can't really see myself using Delicious, but I thought the Holdrege PL use of Delicious tags on their website was neat. I also liked the example given in the video of teachers using it. In that way, it would be very useful.
I can see how it would be very useful.

I have an old delicious account, as in del.icio.us. How do I get rid of the old logo in my browser so I can add the new Delicious?
Ran a couple of ideas past "delicious" -- the results lead me to the tentative conclusion that as a search tool this has a long way to go .. it would help you organize your own "backup files" but don't depend on it to help you find additional pertinent materials. The "critical mass" is probably not there.
Explore tags must use a random number generator or some such to generate start point because the result is different every time you look at it.
(p.s. the blog link above is in the form of xxxx#yy -- the corresponding code within the longer blog entry includes an anchor link. I have chosen to put many of my L2NE specific blog comments in a single long post as the overall blog is a "real one" for the library.)

Now here is a tool that I can relate to! I enjoyed looking through different sites on Delicious -- but they change so quickly! Here is my blog:

It's terrible when you catch a typo after you've published a blog post. Even if you edit it, the permalink still keeps the original title. Oh well! I guess my subconscious sent "thing" instead of think to my typing fingers.

I can see Delicious is a resource I'll use often.

This delicious is going to be a very useful tool for me. I copied all my favorites from work, so now when I am at home I just can log onto delicious and find all my favorites from work. When I am at home and want to look up something I don't have to go looking. Also should keep the favorite page at home a little less crowded.

I think this is something that I will actually be able to use and could be useful on our library website.
I think this one is the best yet -- can't wait to try and put it into use at work and at home! http://lauranloveslibraries.blogspot.com/2008/12/delicious.html
I've heard of Delicious before but never explored it. I can see it could be useful for our library to have a Delicious account. My blog
love it!

Delicious may be the most useful thing yet among the 23 Things. I don't know why I've never checked it out before. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, maybe? I'm going to use this & remind myself to try new things more often. My blog post is: http://quiltinlibrarylady.blogspot.com/2008/12/thing-14-week-9.html
Delicious #14: Another new & improved way to file & save
Maybe after Christmas I will have time to reorganize??? Thanks for trying to help.

I have been hearing about delicious.com for a few years. I just never took time to check it out. I like it. I think I'd really like being able to access my bookmarks from any computer. Pretty cool!

Thing 14-
Delicious could be quite useful. I looked at several recommended ones and set up an account adding three bookmarks and tagging them. I may try using it at home.
My blog is
kathysings.blogspot.com
I messed up the html in the first version of this :~)
2nd go-round with delicious ...two trials inform my take on this thing.
KROY means something in York, and something entirely different in the delicious tag cloud. The Moties in Larry Niven's novels did not make the jump to this nook of cyberspace.
But strangely enough, there is strong concurrence on the meaning of "cutter tables."
I can use Delicious to gather and label (tag) b-board display idea sites. This will make the search faster, easier - especially since I use several different computers in the building.
Delicious looks more useful than some other ideas we've looked at.http://willie-challenger08.blogspot.com/2008/12/delicious-tags-looks-useful.html
I thought this was a fun one, and one that I could use. THING #14--DONE!
http://marieloveslibraries.blogspot.com/2008/12/thing-14.html
I liked the idea of the usefulness of Delicious and the fact that it could be a great time saver. I also liked what Holdrege and Beatrice have done to utilize it. Maybe someday for Valentine...

I liked exploring delicious, but do not have much use for it right now. I enjoyed looking at the tags others used.

Delicious is officially one of my new faves.....
Delicious is a delicious way to get to all my bookmarks when I'm away from own computers. It is a nice way to find other site frequently being used for my areas of interest.

Thing #14
When going through "Tagging and Social Bookmarking" I saw that I could use this as a resource to finds books on specific subjects that I may not already be aware of.
Social-well I don't know how much I would use this feature for myself other than possibly to ask someone for information about a book.
Tagging-When looking for NebraskaAccess the tags I would probably start with would be access, Nebraska, training, and possibly reference.
The feature that I like the most is being able to access bookmarks from any computer. When discussing a subject, being able to show someone else by way of a bookmark, what I'm using as a reference. This is the feature I would prpbably use the most.

Can see how Delicious could be used to gather current info from various sources to use, for instance, for library displays.

Neat!
and to think I've been afraid of delicious.com all these years...

What a big time saver. Loved it. See my remarks at http://quiltingranny-jag.blogspot.com
I have a Delicious account but haven't messed with it since the upgrade. I always found it difficult to use the Tag icon for I couldn't find a way to tie the tag to my personal account rather than to the computer I was currently working on. I really like being able to place multiple tags on a website. Go to my blog for more comments.
