Podcasts take many forms, from short 1-10 minutes commentaries to much longer in person interviews or panel group discussions. There’s a podcast out there for just about every interest area and the best part about this technology is that you don’t have to have an iPod or a MP3 player to access them. Since most podcasts use the MP3 file format, a popular compressed format for audio files, you really just need a PC (or portal device) with headphones or a speaker.
iTunes, the free downloadable application created by Apple, is the directory finding service most associated with podcasts, but if you don’t have iTunes installed there are still plenty of options.
For this discovery exercise participants are asked to take a look at some popular podcast directory tools. Do some exploring on your own and locate a podcast that is of interest to you. Once found, you can easily pull the RSS feed into your Bloglines account as well, so that when new casts become available you’ll be automatically notified of their existence.
Discovery Resources:
- There are many, many podcast directories and finding tools out there. Here are just three of the more popular ones that, unlike iTunes, don't require a software download:
- Podcastalley.com
- PodcastDirectory.com
- Podcast.com
- iTunes Podcast page
(Use the Search iTunes Store function near the bottom of the page.)
- Library related podcasts
- Other Podcast that may be of interest.
- Lastly, you can try searching Google for a topic and add the keyword podcast to your search.
What? You want to learn how to be a podcaster too?
(Optional Resources for those who want to learn to create podcasts)
- Odeo’s Studio – online recording studio
- How to podcast tutorial
- Take a look at one or two of the podcast directories listed and see if you can find a podcast that interests you. See if you can find some interesting library related podcasts here, like book review podcasts or library news.
- Add the RSS feed for a podcast to your Bloglines account
- Create a blog post about your discovery process. Did you find anything useful here?

I tried to stay focused on looking for library related podcasts. However, I found myself veering off in all directions. Lots of informative podcasts!

I loved the availability of information through Podcasts. I know I will enjoy searching for them for areas in my life other than the library world. I have an ipod so will have a good time with the downloads. I do have to say though AGAIN..so much information and so little time. Here's my blog address

Thing #22

Blogged about mobistories, podcasts that aim at the same market segment targeted by Dial-A-Story.
A google search for "library orginated podcasts" brought up this .pdf from A.L.A.'s 2008 Teen Tech Guide series. -- the steps seem simple the way they are described there.

There are just so many of them available that it's hard to focus on any one category. I'll go back to these sites and spend more time looking on another day.

Thing 22, very frustrating to me because the sites I really wanted to add either didn't have and RSS feed or weren't podcasts
A super section and lots of material out there. Like Mary, I was a little frustrated with using the RSS feature. It one site I really wanted to get a fed from Storycorps.net did have the feature. Since learning about podcasting at the 2007 NLA conference I've been trying to generate some interest at our library in doing them. I think it might be just around the corner. The computer I use much of the time I'm working on Nebraska Learns 2.0 doesn't have a speaker.
Couldn't hear the NETV podcast but obediently added it to my blog.
Podcasts are neat! Found Nebraska's very own Pat Leach and her notable books and added that to my bloglines! Read my blog at http://kathysbookshelf.blogspot.com
BlogLINES, duh.
I looked at library related podcasts, but decided to subscribe to one related to my hobby instead since I am subscribed to three or four library RSS feeds. Watch the podcast I made
in my blog!
Two years ago, I had never heard of Podcasts. It is amazing how much they have grown in popularity! See my musings at:
http://musicmaam.blogspot.com/2009/01/pod-people.html
I enter library, book reviews, children books . Results were too many, 146 and 200 for library and book reviews. More comments:http://afanadorsklr.blogspot.com
Thing 22
Found a lot of junk out there. The library related podcasts have potential but in my humble opinion, require too much time.

#22 Podcasts
I actually teach my 8th grade computers class how to create Podcasts and host Booktalks in the media center once a month. I was interested in listening to Mr. Kooser read poetry it was an excellent podcast.

After some of the challenges we have had learning 2.0, this one seemed too easy! See which podcasts I chose at hplmeanderings
I forgot to mention that Radio Book Lounge is under podcastalley.com
I liked Podcastalley. Read about it at:

I found a Podcast that I liked but it didn't provide a RSS feed. So I copied the link, put it into a Gadget, but it wouldn't recognize it. I had to go into my blog layout, select Settings, then Layout, and the go to Show Link Fields and change its field from no to yes. Then it recognized as a Gadget and posted it to my blog, and it worked!!

This one needs some more work plus I would like to try to do my own Podcast. Here is my blog but I'll probably add more tomorrow:

This was highly enjoyable practice. I found a great deal in a surprisingly short time. One question that I have is can you embed podcast audio like you can embed video? I haven't figured that out yet. http://theantiquarianlibrarian.blogspot.com/2009/01/podcasts-thing-22.html
Had a grand time browsing around. So many things I wanted to subscribe to. Here's my blog on what I finally settled on.
Here's my blog post.
