Thing #8: Discover Flickr

Photo sharing websites have been around since the 90s, but it took a small startup site called Flickr to catapult the idea of “sharing” into a full blown online community. How did Flickr do it? In part by being one of the first websites to use keyword "tags" to create associations and connections between photos and users of the site.

For this discovery exercise, you are asked to spend some time exploring Flickr in order to discover what this site has to offer. Find out how tags work, what groups are, and all the neat ways in which people and libraries are using Flickr.

Discovery Resources:

Discovery Exercise:

In this discovery exercise, you have two options…

  1. Option One: Take a good look around Flickr and discover an interesting image that you want to blog about. Be sure to include either a link to the image in your blog post or, if you create a Flickr account, you can use Flickr's blogging tool to post the image to your blog. Another option you have for including images in your post is to use Blogger's photo upload tool.

    --OR--
  2. Option Two: If you're up to an easy challenge, create a free account in Flickr. See How To Create & Customize a Flickr Account (PDF) if you need help! Next, use a digital camera to capture a few pictures. Upload these to your Flickr account, tag at least one of the images “NELearns2.0” and mark it public. Then create a post in your blog about your photo and experience. Be sure to include the image in your post. As mentioned above, once you have a Flickr account you have two options for doing this: through Flickr's blogging tool or using Blogger's photo upload feature.

OPTIONAL: If you have a Flickr account, consider joining and contributing photos to a Flickr group. Here are two you might want to try:

So go ahead, explore the site and have some Flickr photo fun!

We've had photo sets on Flickr for several months. I also have an antique tool collector club related account.
The comment feature in Flickr was a surprise to me. I'll have to read back through everything to see whether Flickr can notify you about comments so you are aware of them, or if you have to log in periodically to learn about new comments.

Susan said...

books4york - yes, you can set up Flickr to email you a notification when someone comments on a photo. Login to your Flickr account. Click on the "You" menu option at the top of the page. This opens a drop-down menu. Select "Your Account." This presents you with several options. Select "Email." Here you can indicate whether or not you want to receive an email notification when someone comments on one of your photos.

I have been using Google Picasa for awhile and I really like it. I also now have a flickr account and I think it has a few more features then what I have found on Picasa. I did both Option 1 and Option 2, just to have the practice.

Flickr is a pretty cool site, I may have to open an account so I can bore my relatives with vacation photos! I'm glad this guy (whose photo I used on my blog)took this picture, I have one exactly like it in my vaca scrapbook!

I have had a Flickr account for years, but had pretty much abandoned it for Photobucket. However, I uploaded some new photos once I learned about all the great new features. I think I may even be using it more frequently in the future - and not just for 2.0! :)

I actually created two blogs about this exercise as well because I had one photo I edited that I preferred remain private, and the other I posted to my blog through Flickr.

You can see them at:

I chose Option #2 for Discover Flickr. I made an account & uploaded 5 photos, not without a bunch of goofs, though. But eventually, I got it. I also got 3 of those photos into my blog. It's all here:

Because Homer has a digital camera and lots of photos on his personal computer, he chose to do option #2 under Discovery Exercise. However, he doesn't want to take the time to transfer all his photos - whatever the benefits. I'm beginning to think Homer has an attitude problem.

Added a photo to my blog - I use facebook and upload photos & videos to it so it wasn't too hard.

Anonymous said...

Okay, I created the account and was left a little frustrated. I tagged a picture with the NELearns2.0 and when I did a search, my picture did not come up (6 others did). When I did some research I found this information on their help site:

If your account is new, first you need to upload at least 5 photos. After that minimum has been reached, then it shouldn't take more than a few days until your photos appear in searches, groups, etc. To make sure your photos show in searches, remember to add accurate tags and descriptions.
If your account is not new and some of your images are not showing, here are a few things you can check,
• What is the safety setting? Items marked as moderate or restricted will not show in badges, RSS feeds, for people that have safe search on, or are not logged in.
• Is your account hidden from search?
• If only some photos aren't showing, make sure they are not flagged to be hidden from searches.

I'll check back in a couple days and make sure I did it correctly

Following random links in the "RSS" exercises led me to FLICKR's Libraries & Librarians group.

The group insists all photos be tagged, and they have a tutorial on how to geotag (put items in spatial context ) in their tagging guidelines.
How about it, Nebraska Librarians -- shall we collaborate on a guided tour of our workplaces??

Michael Sauers said...

Actually, there is already something like that that the NLC's set up. You can see the current map @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/nebraskapublibsmap/map?&fLat=41.3981&fLon=-99.5933&zl=11.

Just add photos of your library, place them on the map accordingly, and add the tag "nebraskapublibsmap". Do that and they'll show up.

I discovered something today.
Since we're on I-80 I thought why not search FLICKR for "York Nebraska"
Lots of travelers photos of businesses & the water tower at the interchange.
Some photo sets from local residents, including some local history related ones.
And from "travelin..." -- Our shop.

Susan said...

This is a response to books4york's comment about searching for "York Nebraska" on Flickr. I love searching for local photos on Flickr. It's fun to see what other people from the area take pictures of. One thing you might want to consider - from the library's Flickr account comment on some of these local photographer's photos, or add them as a contact. This will let them know that the library has a presence on Flickr, and maybe they will add you as a contact. Then they'll see new library-related photos you post. It would be a way to do a bit of outreach!

Flickr was very interesting, but also a little frustrating. I never could figure out how to get the picture of my library added to the NLC Nebraska map? Is there lag time like with adding photos to groups? I guess I'll check back in a day or 3 and see if something magical has happened.

We have a digital camera so I expect to be lurking around snapping all kinds of pics to post. I am going to be watching Marie's desk as we have a continual war going on as to whose desk is messier. When one of us is gone, it becomes a challenge to pile up "stuff" on the desk top. When I am ahead, I will snap a photo to document.
